very rare and remarkably intact picturesque three-dimensional or stand-alone authentic american white-glazed terra cotta spread-winged eagle clenching arrows. the remarkable exterior building figural statue was designed and fabricated by the midland terra cotta company, chicago, il. the terra cotta eagle was salvaged from a south side commercial building demolished in the early 1980’s. the original finish is a unique marbleized off-white glaze over fired clay. the detailed eagle with large feathered wings and angled head are sharp and visually striking. according to plate 60 of midland’s product catalog, the eagle was simply referred to as a “freestanding finial.” the date of fabrication is 1917. measures 3′ 8″ in height by 3′ 4″ in width.
