museum quality single-sided late 19th century refinished ornamental cast iron american bridge plaque designed and fabricated by or for the chicago bridge & iron works chicago, il. the deeply embossed shield was originally mounted to a pin or gusset-jointed girder on either end of a chicago truss bridge. the plaque was salvaged from a south side chicago bridge demolished long ago. the chicago bridge and iron works company was established in 1889, when george and william wheelock agreed to merge their kansas city bridge and iron company with bridge builder horace horton. measures 13 x 8 inches.
