very unique lawndale backstage theater control panel used for interior auditorium lighting. the c. 1927 panel contains a black enameled steel metal plate with original bakelite switches corresponding to regional lighting (e.g., “main ceiling”, “orchestra spots”, “white borders”, etc). the top features a ruby red faceted glass jewel indicator light with copper ring. the panel was originally a part of a larger control unit found behind the stage, near the ropes and pulleys (for operating the curtains). the main unit, manufactured by the major lighting and electrical co., chicago, il., was approximately 6 ft. in height by 15 ft. in length. major supplied theatrical lighting for the bulk of chicago’s movie palaces. the panel would make a unique light switch in a commercial or residential setting.
