About This Item

original early 1930’s interior ambient or cove light fixture salvaged from the backside of an ornamental plaster structure found along the walls of the c. 1931 nortown theatre. this type of fixture accentuated the details found within the plaster structures and/or scenery when the houselights dimmed. the shade holder is made of spun copper with reflective “mercury” interior. manufactured by the major lighting co., chicago. the deep blue cobalt glass lens or filter is embossed with the major logo. this type of accent light, along with the ones found encased within the theater ceiling (emulating star lights), contributed greatly to the “atmospheric” presence this type of theater sought to create as an escape for their patrons during the great depression.
