exterior terra cotta restoration work underway on rapp and rapp’s old dearborn bank building (1928).
i believe the buff-colored speckled glaze terra cotta ornament was executed by the american terra cotta company, but i need to double check my catalogs.

the old dearborn bank building (rapp and rapp, 1928) is a unique chicago skyscraper accentuated with fantastical glazed terra cotta with mythological creatures located along the base of the building. the dearborn bank was designed by architectural firm rapp and rapp – known for designing some of chicago’s finest movie places beginning with the central park theater (1917) – is only one of two commercial buildings the firm built solely for use as offices. elements of their signature theater designs are expressed through the unique terra cotta ornament applied to the building.
more to follow as this project is ongoing.
