19th century chicago greystone casualties from 1948 congress street expressway way

images of chicago greystone causalities to make way for congress street express way in 1948.
to establish fair market value, the city made photographs and property valuations for each and every property targeted for demolition.

despite the widespread destruction and displacement, at least there’s an extensive visual record of the buildings no longer with us.
when digitizing one photo after the next, i couldn’t help but wonder why none of the building materials were salvaged and/or recycled.
such a colossal waste of bedford limestone and other exterior and interior building materials.
