01 Jun photographic study of george grant elmslie-designed polychromed terra cotta adorning merchants national bank building

images from an exhaustive photographic study (conducted in may of 2021) of merchants national bank building (1912) located in winona, mn. the early 20th century structure is widely considered the largest and most impressive bank buildings designed by purcell, feick, and elmslie.

the exterior and interior design elements reflect the agricultural importance of the community, with terra cotta depicting grain on the exterior and murals of farm scenes (painted by frequent collaborator albert fleury inside). the building’s interior receives natural light through expansive leaded art glass window walls and a skylight. the polychromed terra cotta ornament was modeled by kristian schneider for the american terra cotta company of chicago.
