15 Feb forgotten objects found by richard nickel in adler and sullivan’s garrick theater shortly before it was demolished

the following pieces of ephemera were found by richard nickel while exploring/photographing adler and sullivan’s garrick (schiller) theater a few months before atlas arrived to begin wrecking it – likely in the winter months of 1960. demolition of the theater wrapped up in june of 1961.
the programs mostly date to the early 20th century. the die-cut lithographed cardboard sign dates to the 1890’s, when the building was still known as the schiller building/theater. nickel documented and/or collected other “portals to the past” that surfaced as the building was pulled apart by the wreckers.

i’m including additional images from a previous post where i mentioned sharing objects i discovered in the attic of congress theater (1926) with john vinci. the story reminded him of finding an old coin purse under floorboards of the garrick theater’s upper balcony while salvaging ornament in 1961.

thankfully john held onto the purse since the time he found it, so i was thrilled to document the contents, which included several coins and a single folded silver dollar bill. judging from the dates, the purse was lost by a theatergoer in 1915.
note: the last four images are objects found in the plenums in congress theater (1926) during my two years documenting its interior and exterior.
