10 May A Tribute to Richard Nickel at Glessner House June 21, 2022

THIS PROGRAM IS BEING OFFERED IN-PERSON AND ONLINE
On the first day of summer, exactly 50 years ago – June 21, 1972 – nearly 200 friends and colleagues of Richard Nickel gathered in the courtyard of Glessner House to pay tribute to the dedicated preservationist and talented architectural photographer who lost his life while salvaging ornament in Adler & Sullivan’s Chicago Stock Exchange building.

Join us on the 50th anniversary of that event as we celebrate the life and enduring legacy of Richard Nickel, which included saving Glessner House in the mid-1960s. The program will include a conversation with Nickel’s lifelong friend John Vinci, who worked beside him in salvaging ornament in numerous Sullivan buildings, and preserved Nickel’s irreplaceable archive of photographs and other materials through the Richard Nickel Committee.

Eric Nordstrom of Urban Remains will be setting up a small exhibit of photographs and other Nickel materials for viewing. Richard Cahan and Michael Williams, co-authors of several books on Nickel, will discuss those books and their reception by the public. Copies of their book, Richard Nickel: Dangerous Years, will be available for purchase and signing. Participants will also hear selected excerpts of a recording of the 1972 tribute event, including a performance of one of Nickel’s favorite Beethoven piano sonatas, performed by Easley Blackwood.
Our annual Hasbrouck Preservation Event is generously funded by a gift from Paul and Margaret Lurie.
