partially completed photographic study (east elevation only) of louis h. sullivan’s peoples savings bank (1911) located at 101 3rd avenue, s.w., cedar rapids, ia.
peoples savings was the second of sullivan’s “jewel boxes” built in small towns across the midwest. the bank was the last commission george grant elmslie assisted sullivan on.
the exterior textured brick facade was produced in 15 different shades to produce what sullivan described as the effect of an “oriental rug.”
the ornamental textured and polychromed terra cotta ornament (limited in use to reduce building costs) was modeled by kristian schneider for the american terra cotta company. the interior art glass window were done by louis millet.
