feeling burned out and broken – not to mention nearing 50 years of age, i hope this will be the last time i enter a house handed a death sentence.
the work is very unforgiving to body and mind. and no one really gives a shit one way or the other, and that’s ok, because i give a shit.
but after nearly 30 years documenting and salvaging commercial and residential remnants from the past, i have the never-ending joy living with chronic pain, in the form of five herniated discs, torn rotator cuffs and biceps, fractured and broken bones, dislocations, sprains, and stitches.
while i’ve known for a long time that it’s part and parel to what i do, it sadddens me at times when i pick up and hoist my children in my arms and have to remind self not to wince. thankfully, their smiles makes the pain go away.
