31 Oct healy and millet-designed stained glass skylight salvaged from adler and sullivan’s 1889-90 auditorium theater joins bld. 51 museum

the bldg. 51 museum and archive secured an original healy and millet-designed oversized leaded stained glass skylight window salvaged from adler and sullivan’s 1889-90 auditorium theater. the hinged window has been releaded within a newly-built solid oak wood frame. the original centrally located ruby red faceted jewel was lost long ago (given their size and weight, many dropped from the windows over the course of time and were damaged and/or discarded) and replaced with stained glass. the window is largely intact and stable, with hairline cracks evident.

the auditorium building is a national historic landmark located in chicago, illinois. designed by dankmar adler and louis sullivan, it was completed in 1889 as a multipurpose building that included a theater, a hotel, and offices. today, the building is primarily known as the home of roosevelt university and the auditorium theatre.

healy and millet was a chicago-based decorative design and art glass firm founded by louis j. millet and george healy. the two men met while studying in paris in the 1870s and later became business partners in chicago in 1879.
