dave felling salvage images of stephen v. shipman’s italianate style elgin state hospital & the northern illinois hospital and asylum for the insane (1874) taken during its demolition in 1993.

the center building’s distinctive exterior two-story ornamental cast iron veranda above the limestone portico was carefully taken apart with the use of a crane and loaded onto a flatbed truck for transport to an offsite storage facility.

the veranda was identified as the “girard house pattern” in architect stephen v. shipman’s specifications.
portions of the portico were later restored and rebuilt at st. igantius college prep, located at 1076 roosevelt road, chicago, il..
