21 Apr photographic survey of hugh garden-designed sullivanesque style grave for doctor ernst schmidt
the grave of dr. ernst schmidt (1830–1900) is in section i, lot 320 at graceland cemetery in chicago. his monument, located in the western part of the cemetery, was designed by his son richard e. schmidt and hugh m.g. garden of the firm schmidt & garden; garden was a notable prairie school architect.
dr. schmidt was a “forty-eighter” who emigrated after the failed 1848 german revolutions. he served as a union army surgeon during the civil war and later led consulting staffs at michael reese hospital and alexian brothers hospital.
