henry fuermann (1861–1949) was an influential american architectural photographer best known for documenting the work of frank lloyd wright and louis sullivan. working mainly from chicago through his studio, henry fuermann & sons, he produced sharp platinum and gelatin silver prints that remain essential visual records of early modern american architecture.

wright favored fuermann during his productive prairie school years, especially for his dynamic diagonal compositions, which offered a more expressive alternative to static, symmetrical building views. fuermann carefully photographed the interiors and exteriors of many of wright’s early masterpieces, including:
the darwin d. martin house in buffalo, new york.
the avery coonley house in riverside, illinois, including rare lifestyle promotional images.
wright’s oak park home and studio.

the complex, later-demolished midway gardens in chicago.

major mid-career works such as unity temple and the imperial hotel in tokyo.

documenting louis sullivan and chicago skyscrapers:
in addition to his work with wright, fuermann documented the rise of chicago’s foundational architecture. he often worked with louis sullivan, wright’s mentor, photographing the intricate ornamentation and terra-cotta designs of buildings such as the national farmers’ bank of owatonna and the home building association bank.
