dedicated preservationists are working urgently to save barry byrne’s jackson storage warehouse in la grange

UPDATE AS OF 8-8-2026:

george kingsley and barry byrne’s historically important jackson storage warehouse building in la grange has been emptied, and scaffolding erected in preparation for demolition.

handed a death sentence last night (1-12-2026).

exterior photographic survey, taken in january and august 2026, documents george kingsley’s four-story jackson storage and van company warehouse, a polychromed terra cotta-clad building constructed in 1923–24 at 112 east burlington street in la grange, illinois.

prairie school architect francis barry byrne was involved in the façade design.

according to byrne’s wife, annette, she “always looked out for it whenever passing by train through the western suburbs.”

the northwestern terra cotta company of chicago produced the terra cotta ornament.

the distinctive gothic-style ornamental cornice—clear evidence of byrne’s involvement—was removed in the 1950s and presumably destroyed. it included the jackson company’s name plaque and finials.
