vacillating between despair and defiance

“vacillating between despair and defiance.”

a compelling collection of halftone images scanned from a rare original copy of the 1961 softbound book the homeless man on skid row, published by the city of chicago tenants relocation bureau. the book documents the neighborhood’s residents, including their demographics, struggles with alcohol addiction, and living conditions.

the photographs were taken by the cook county department of public aid, the national opinion research center, the salvation army, mildred mead, and gerald s. newman.

i’ve included additional scans of glass slides i found in a safe while salvaging the pacific garden mission during its 2007 demolition. though faded, these color images offer a glimpse of the old “skid row” along state street and several interior views of the mission.
