11 Dec photodocumenting architectural building ornament in wisconsin revisited

unfortunately, i haven’t had much time to visit neighboring wisconsin this year to photograph architecture in cities and town across the state. i did have a chance to revisit louis h. sullivan’s farmers and merchants union bank in columbus (1919) while in madison shooting the two bradley houses – the first by sullivan (1908) and the second by purcell, feick, and elmslie (1910). sadly, i did not get to see the interior of purcell and elmslie’s josephine crane bradley house, but i did manage to document exterior ornament, including the art glass front door, fret-sawn wood panel, etc. 

i’ve only made two trips to milwaukee this year and the time spent there photographing buildings was limited on both occasions. since i’ve devoted a great deal of time shooting architectural ornament in downtown milwaukee for several years now, i’m not terribly concerned that i’ve missed much in terms of demolition or alterations and rehabilitation. 

the following images offer a small sampling of my work in wisconsin in 2018. i’ve included images of richly colored terra cotta adorning purcell and emslie’s merchants national bank (1912) when i drove up to winona from la crosse in the fall.
