22 Nov picket signs used for protesting demolition of adler and sullivan’s 1892 garrick theater
the following richard nickel images document numerous hand-written picket signs used to protest demolition of adler and sullivan’s schiller building or garrick theater (1892). the rally was held on june 13th from noon to 1pm. i’ve included additional images taken on the day of the protest with several of the signs pictured used by those who cared enough to participate in sending a clear message to mayor richard j. daley to intervene and prevent the landmark’s destruction.

the battle was ultimately lost and a year later demolition was well underway, but richard nickel, john vinci, and david norris – along with wreckers from atlas wrecking – were given the opportunity to salvage interior and exterior ornament for distribution to museums and institutions across the world.
