the john wellborn root-designed terra cotta was executed by the northwestern terra cotta company, chicago, ills.
burnham and root designed and built the stately michighan avenue mansion (one of the few still standing) for sidney a. kent, a founder of the chicago union stock yard company.
the house was later occupied by barbed-wire industrialist and robber baron john warne gates from 1896-1906.
