medill, who was a former mayor of chicago and founder of the chicago tribune, gifted the palatial house to his daughter elinor and her husband, robert wilson patterson, jr.
in 1914, the house was sold to cyrus hall mccormick, jr., who ran the international harvester company founded by his father who invented the reaper. mccormick hired architect david adler to build an addition in 1927.
the richly colored, speckeled glaze terra cotta was executed by the northwestern terra cotta company.
