bragdon designed the building in 1908 as a classroom and lecture space for the rochester athenaeum & mechanics institute (predecessor to the rochester institute of technology) arts program.
the richly colored glazed terra cotta was executed by the atlantic terra cotta company, perth amboy, ny.
