2024 fall tour of louis sullivan’s iowa banks draws to a close with exterior photographic survey of 1914 merchants’ bank in grinnell

images of louis sullivan’s merchant’s national bank (1914), located at 833 4th avenue, grinnell, ia.
the winged lions are comprised of gold patinated cast bronze. the originals, comprised of terra cotta, were smashed by vandals. one lies in pieces in a display case within the bank. the other is partially intact and also on display within the bank’s lobby.
the art glass was executed by long time sullivan collaborator louis millet. the terra cotta ornament was sculpted by kristian schneider and fabricated by american terra cotta.
