fulton market’s hollenbach seed company building (1912) reduced to rubble in a matter of hours

the three-story hollenbach seed company building designed by the architectural firm of worthmann and steinbach and completed in 1912, was reduced to rubble in a matter of hours yesterday afternoon. sadly, the distinctive sprayed-glaze red terra cotta ornament, including the centrally located name plaque bearing the owner’s name, was destroyed during demolition.

surprisingly, there was absolutely no interest and/or arrangements made to salvage anything from the building, whether it was structural (old growth timbers), utilitarian (vintage elevator doors or motors and of course, the terra cotta, executed specifically for the building, based on the architect’s plans.

the following images were taken mid-afternoon on monday, when the building’s façade was brought crashing down in nearly three hours, leaving piles of brick, glass and terra cotta strewn about.
