henry j. schlacks abadoned st. martin of tours church (1895) in need of maintenance and repair

images from ongoing visual survey of the henry j. schlack’s designed st. martin of tours abandoned german catholic church (1895) located at 5848 s. princeton avenue in the englewood neighborhood of chicago. the majority of the photographs taken thus far, concentrate on the bedford limestone exterior, with several detailed shots of the carved stone ornament along the church’s roofline and tower’s spire.

in 1894, notable church architect henry j. schlacks was commissioned to design a church building at 5848 to 5850 s. princeton in Englewood for german immigrants and a german-american settlement established in 1886. originally constructed as “st. martin’s de tours,” the gothic revival style limestone structure was said to be modeled after a church in mainz, germany. the name was later modified to “st. martin de porres,” honoring the roman catholic african-american congregation which settled in englewood.
