31 Oct photographing “portals to the past” in jerome, arizona

spending an afternoon in the small and amazingly eccentric town of jerome, az., is an unforgettable experience, where portals to the past exist in an oddly suspended state, immune to change or significant alteration. this glorified “ghost town” was an ideal location for me to practice capturing these historical markers in unfamiliar territory. small elements of the architecture and landscape reveal a storied past spanning from the town’s infancy in the 19th century, when it was a bustling gold and copper mining town filled with brothels and saloons, to its rapid decline during the great depression – when the price of copper dropped, leading to wage-reductions and shut-downs. with such limited time and several hundred pictures to edit, the following is a small selection of photos that represent the industrial details i gravitated toward when wandering around jerome’s streets.
