a photographic survey of the extensively modified gerhard h. winner mansion, a distinctive vestige of milwaukee’s grand avenue

exterior photographic survey of the gerhard h. winner mansion, a german revival brick and terra cotta home designed by crane & barkhausen and built by a. kroening & son in 1897 for distillery owner and wholesaler gerhard winner.

gerhard h. winner, a german immigrant who arrived in milwaukee in 1858, became a successful distiller and wholesaler, known for opposing the “whiskey trust.” in 1897, he built an elaborate mansion at 2532 w. wisconsin ave., reflecting his prosperity, but only enjoyed it until his death in 1909.

as the city expanded, wealthy residents left grand ave., and many mansions were repurposed or demolished; winner’s was divided into apartments and later altered extensively. the building changed hands multiple times, serving as a car showroom, electronics store, and various small businesses.

today, the structure survives in a much-altered state, standing among few remnants of grand ave.’s once-grand homes, symbolizing the area’s changing fortunes.
