the brick and stucco two-story, 10-room, 4,000-square-foot house was constructed in 1913 for e.s. hoyt, the president of the renowned red wing stoneware company.

listed on the national register of historic places since the 1970s, it stands out among red wing’s beautifully preserved homes, distinguishing itself from the town’s second empire, italianate, gothic, and greek revival styles.

designed by purcell, feick, and elmslie in the prairie school style, this house features a low-pitched roof, rows of leaded glass windows, and fret-sawn wood ornament emphasizing its horizontal lines.

built for a wealthy client, p&e allocated funds for premium details. the home features diamond-patterned leaded art glass on windows, doors, and bookcases, as well as sawn wood ornamentation throughout. a striking mosaic above the fireplace, depicting a moonlit sky, was crafted in minneapolis by edward l. sharretts.

according to purcell’s 1940s biography, the hoyts appreciated their home’s unique artistic flair and enjoyed being “pioneers in art.”
