photographic study parker berry’s first state bank of manilus facade and sullivanesque terra cotta ornament

the first state bank of manilus, ills., was one of parker berry’s earliest commissions after spending 8 years as louis h. sullivan’s chief draftsman. the two-story red brick sullivanesque style bank building was designed in 1915 with john wesley berry as building contractor. despite being a casualty of the great depression, the building still stands largely intact.

note: i’ve included additional images of the heavily altered princeton dry good store (1917), the prouty old ladies home (1917 – only one wing was actually built) and his grave located in oakland cemetery. i didn’t have time to shoot the family home where he died at an early age – succumbing to the 1918 spanish flu.
