04 Oct rare and important 1st edition “skeleton construction in steel buildings” joins BLDG. 51 museum archive
the bldg. 51 museum archive recently acquired an exceptionally rare 1st edition of william h. birkmire’s “skeleton construction in steel buildings,” published by john wiley & sons, new york, ny., 1893. the profusely illustrated hardcover book with red cloth and gilt-stamped lettering contains information on the planning and construction of high office buildings including, but not limited to, column connections, floor loads and framing, and several examples of completed buildings.

about the author:
william h. birkmire was an american architect, author and engineer, active in new york city. birkmire studied architecture with samuel sloan. he was an authority on modern steel construction of buildings. he designed the mexican national opera house at mexico city, mexico, and was the author of the planning and construction of high office buildings, architectural iron and steel, and other books on modern building methods.
