up in flames: rediscovered photographic images of adler and sullivan’s pilgrim baptist church (1891) and wirt dexter building

adler and sullivan’s pilgrim baptist church (formerly kehilath anshe ma’ariv synagogue (adler and sullivan, 1891) as it appeared on january 7, 2006 – the day after the devastating fire.
found these images taken the morning after adler & sullivan’s dexter building (1887) succumbed to a five-alarm fire the other day. completely forgot about these images. not the greatest, but i did document the facade’s centrally located interlocking cast iron columns.
there were over 200 firefighters there at one point.
i was stunned. it was somewhat chaotic. i distinctly recall the two carved limestone corbels falling into the rubble – forever lost.
to heneghan’s credit, they did save a great deal of the street level rusticated stone, exterior perforated girders, and nearly all of the interlocking cast iron columns.
the stone and iron reside in heneghan’s yard to this day.
