william j. newman’s “dawn manor” reconstructed and reunited with it’s salvaged chicago board of trade exterior ornament

william j. newman’s gothic style sandstone summer cottage (1855) was carefully and systematically deconstructed and transported to nearby wisconsin dells, where it was rebuilt at 413 south burritt avenue as a restaurant, bar, and speakeasy.

thankfully, the salvaged chicago ornament deposited by newman’s wrecking company from boyington’s granite-clad board of trade building (1885-1929) was reunited with the reconstructed cottage, which includes additional full-figured statuary and a seemingly lost panel to complete one of several hand-carved emblematic plaques found on the old board of trade.

the last of frank lloyd wright’s midway gardens concrete spindles or sprites were removed from the old location and sold in the 1990s, but a few of the urns remained and were likely destroyed, given their dilapidated condition. in a somewhat comical gesture, the new owners purchased crudely cast miniature sprites that flank the entrance.
