exhaustive exterior photographic survey of purcell, feick, and elmslie’s two-story first national bank (1911), located 8 west davenport street. rhinelander, wisc.
the building is comprised of lake superior sandstone, wire-cut “tapestry” brick and elmslie-designed terra cotta ornament.
original varnished oak woodwork from the arcade and art glass skylight that once illuminated the bank lobby remain intact.
a few doors and woodwork on second floor survived several subsequent alterations.
the exterior wall sconces were added in the 1990s.
the richly colored polychromed spray-glazed terra cotta blocks and centrally located cartouche were modeled by kristian schneider for the american terra cotta company, chicago, il.
