urban remains joins forces with logan square preservation to salvage architectural elements from german evangelical lutheran church (1896) during its demolition

salvage operation in progress. updates with information on church history to follow.

image gallery below includes documentation of time capsule eextraction along with exterior and interior images of church during beginning phase of demolition (i.e., the church building itself as adjoining school was demolished last week).

the soldered-joint zinc box or time capsule was badly damaged upon careful removal from bedford limestone cornerstone interior cavity. the underside of the metal box was heavily corroded along the edges and corners to the point that the paper contents were fully exposed. the water-logged contents were immediately placed in a freezer, which will arrest any fungal growth and/or chemical changes until its handed over to a conservator.

the zinc box was taken to urban remains and photographed in studio (images below).
