demolition of the daniel a. jones hospital building (1888) well underway

rush hospital awarded heneghan wrecking the task to bring down its older buildings as part of its decade-long campus transformation. for months now, their excavators have been tearing away at the daniel a. jones hospital building, constructed in 1888. the entrance and other elements, including an unopened time capsule were removed for the hospital. in addition, the majority of the red terra cotta ornament gracing the upper facade will be saved by heneghan wrecking. the building’s architect was stephen v. shipman.

the other two buildings on the chopping block are the rawson clinical laboratory (1923-24) and the senn memorial building (1900-02). the former was designed by marshall & fox, who were known for multiple chicago hotels, including the drake, blackstone, edgewater beach, etc. the latter was designed by shepley, rutan & coolidge (architects for the chicago public library, art institute, etc.). the three architects were assistants to henery h. richardson before beginning their own firm. the building was named after surgeon nicholas senn, who contributed fifty thousand dollars towards its construction.
